Sync Firefox Bookmarks And Passwords

I use my laptop a lot, in all kinds of places. I also use my desktop a lot...usually in the same place.

When using two or more computers to surf the web, it really helps to have your bookmarks and passwords
saved and updated every time you access your web browser.

In this quick how-to, I will lay out the steps, in plain English, for even the greenest of beginners to understand.
Automatically synchronizing your browsers saves so much time, you will notice right away!

> Before we begin, this tutorial will cover using SyncPlaces, a Firefox plugin.
What is Firefox? Firefox is a FREE web browser available HERE. I prefer it over Internet Explorer...hands down.
SyncPlaces is available HERE. Once you have Firefox running, this is available as an add-on.

You will also need to set up a remote FTP host, or a place to upload and download your settings. This is not hard to do.
To avoid getting off-topic, I recommend searching the rest of the forums for that info. *Use something secure!

If you're getting confused already, relax. Once you get said browser and said browser extension, half of the work is done!

*Note* This is my personal, preferred method...Be aware that there are other ways of doing this, with other browsers.

Okay! On to the meat of the subject!

Open Firefox.
Click Tools>Add-ons
Select SyncPlaces from list box. Click options.

>This information tells Syncplaces where to send/receive bookmarks, etc.
Now, click the tab that says Server.

Tab: Server>Connection (this is the most important setting)
Select the FTP button at the top.
Add your FTP host address (if you don't understand, bookmark now and go look up 'FTP Host')
Add FTP username
Add FTP password

Tab: Server>Synchronization
You can change the path where SyncPlaces saves data on the server.
I leave mine as default, which saves right at the home directory, but organization helps!

Now, that is basically it! On the Actions tab, click Send Bookmarks/Passwords.
It should pop up and tell you that it is sending.
At this point, if it can't connect to server, you need to go back to the Server>Connections tab and check host, user, password.

I hope this helps at least one person. This is a very useful tool, but like I said...Not the only one!

If it has helped you say thanks and leave a comment to keep this tutorial alive

A Short Sample Of Ethical Hacking: Auto-shutdown Your Computer!

Yo Yo Yo,

First off, ethical hacking is a touchy issue and most people would rather not learn about it lest they end up using it in the wrong way. But sometimes it helps to know a lot about how things are done in your operating system so that you may get out of a sticky situation someday. This here is a short sample of what you can do with a little knowledge of ethical hacking - this is just one small situation - there are thousands or maybe millions of others, but a start has to be made somewhere

Okay, so did anyone of you meet this situation where you switch on your computer and see a pop-up window which says "Windows is shutting down" and displays a timer? That's a smart little virus acting in the background, but did you know that you could prevent it with a simple command? Here's how you do it. This works only for Windows because such annoying viruses appear only in Windows

NOTE: 1) DO NOT USE THIS FOR ANY WRONG PURPOSES - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! (Jkz )

2) I'm using this in Windows 7, so there will be some visual changes for XP users. I will say more
below.

================================================== ============

1) On the Windows desktop, right-click and point to New-->Shortcut

2) Next you will get a window which asks for the location of the shortcut. In that, type this command:

Code:
shutdown -r -t
replace the time with the number of seconds you would like before your computers shuts down. as an example, I have given 100 seconds.

3) Give the shortcut a name and click "Finish" - it will appear on the desktop.

It is important to have enough time to give the counter-command so keep a sensible time gap, like 30, 40 seconds. If you foolishly give less time, you might not have enough time left to give the counter command, resulting in the shutdown of the system!

4) Now to create the counter-command. Right-click on the desktop again, point to New-->Shortcut, and the command now is:

Code:
shutdown -a
The 'a' stands for 'abort' which cancels out the previous command, thus preventing shutdown of the system.

Give it another name and click "Finish"

5) So, want to test this out?! Simply doublt-click on the "virus" we created on your desktop, and you should see a popup window:

For XP users --> you will see a window which says something like "Windows is shutting down" and underneath it will be a countdown counter showing the number of seconds remaining to shutdown. I don't remember the exact thing since it's been a while I've used XP.

For Vista/7 users --> Based on the time you've set, you'll get a window like this:

6)Now, quickly, before the time runs out, double-click on the "anti-virus" we made and it will counter the shutdown, cancelling it.

For XP users--> The shutdown window will disappear, and maybe you won't get any other notification

For Vista/7 users--> You will simply get a notification like thus:

See how simple it is? Now imagine if somehow who got hold of your computer put the time gap as one second and put this in the startup folder, what would happen?! you wouldn't have any time to react at all! It is that scary......

Just a small clarification on the "virus" command:

"shutdown" is a function employed in the windows mechanism and has many options which you can access using the terminal(DOS prompt) in windows and typing "shutdown" at the prompt. some of the options are:

-r : restarts the system (we used this one in the example)

-s: shuts down the system

-a: abort shutdown

-l: logs off

-h: goes into hibernation

and there are more.......all this seems interesting to learn and can come handy in situations where you least expect it!

Well, I hope you enjoyed this tutorial please leave a comment about it and remember.

It would be even better if its at your finger tips, something which gives instant responses to your queries. Guess what? Here is something you might love!

Google has started this service called Google SMS Search in India which works with SMS. All you have to do is SMS your query to 09773300000 for cricket scores, railway info, to find businesses around you, stock quotes, horoscopes and more on your phone.

Since internet is easily accesible now a days, we would like to rather search for our queries online than via SMS. My friend and I have made an IM Bot for this service which does the same thing without the need to open the browser.
Add “ googlesms@bot.im “ to your GTalk and “smsgooglebot@yahoo.com” for yahoo users.

Windows 7 Theme Tricks

Windows 7 by default has only few themes available for customization. People who are not satisfied with these in build themes can get few more themes for Windows 7 which are actually hidden. These themes are available for certain regional countries such as Australia, Canada, Great Britain, United States and South Africa. These themes can be revealed and used by the following steps.

win7-themes

1. Open Windows Explorer and click Organize
2. Select Folder and Search Options and navigate to the View tab.
3. Select Show hidden files, folders and drivers and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). Click Yes, if prompted for confirmation.
4. Click OK and now browse to the folder: Windows\Globalization\MCT
5. There are five folders here with the name with format MCT-XX (where XX is AU, CA, GB, US, or ZA) which represents globalization settings for each region. Go into the folder that you want to activate its theme.
Note that AU, CA and ZA regions have the same themes.
6. Open the Theme folder inside the selected region folder.
7. Double click on the XX.theme file to apply the theme to the Windows 7 desktop system. Once a theme is executed and activated, the theme will be available and saved into Personalization options, so that user can select this theme directly from the personalization settings.
8. Now to go to Folder Options to reverse the first 5 steps to hide the hidden and protected system files and folders again

Avoid Google Banning your Site! (:D

If you’ve had a site running for more than 6 months and getting over 500 visitors daily, it not pretty hard to figure out that 80% of them are coming from search results found on Google. And what happens if, one fine day you realize that Google has banned your site! Find out how you can play it safe and get your deserved organic search results.
  1. Avoid Keyword Stuffing:

What is keyword stuffing exactly? Wikipedia states,‘Keyword stuffing occurs when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content.’
Inserting excessive keywords into your posts, in meta tags or in your template (with the font color matching the background color) will lead your site into a ban from Google.
  2. Avoid Sponsered Posts:

The job of the search engine is to search and provide geniuine content to the user, that will be useful to them. Sites like PayPerPost and SponseredReview pay bloggers, to blog about the products of their advertisers. In this case many of the reviews aren’t true and up to the mark.
If Google was to show such a result, then the usefulness and productiveness of the search results is absent. Hence Google has to ban your site.
  3. Avoid Paid Text Link Ads:

The basic concept in paid text link ads is as follows: An advertiser pays you for a campaign, wherein he nominates certain keywords on your blog posts, which will link back to his site.
Although this is a great way to earn money, such linking may not be relevant to the keywords and may often contain spam contents. Hence there have been cases where Google has banned sites containing paid text link ads.
How can I find out if my site is banned by Google?

To know this, use this code:
site: www.yoursite.com
(replace www.yoursite.com with the domain name of the site you think may be banned)
And, if you see no results on your site then maybe, it is banned by Google, or the robots.txt file is bad, or you haven’t submitted your site to Google.
See that your Robots.txt file doesn’t contain the code below:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
Don’t use “Disallow: /” just replace “/” with the directory (Eg: “Disallow: /Personal” ) you want Google to not index.
If you follow this, your site will be again listed in Google, if not, it may be banned.
Here is a list of ways by which you can keep your website in Google’s good books:

1) Up-time: Make sure you have the best up-time possible for your website. This means you must have reliable web hosting. If Google visits your website and it is not up, you may risk Google banning your site.
2) Spam: It is the thing which no search engine loves. So don’t use spamming techniques to promote your website. This will almost definitely lead to condemnation of your website for at least 6 months. Never use “black hat” methods like doorways, hidden text or cloaking. You are only setting yourself up for disaster.
3) Plagiarism: Make sure your content is original and relevant. Websites that duplicate content are punished with lower rankings and even bans. Your content should always be made for human consumption and relate to your website’s theme.
4) Linking: Linking is a two way street. Not only should the links going out of your website be quality, but be certain that the links that lead to your website are from Google respected locations as well. Avoid link farms and any paid linking service. Also, excessive linking is a red flag for Google. When you add internal links on your own sites, make sure you do it in moderation and with purposeful intent.
5) Cleanliness: Be sure your site is Google friendly. Build your website so that Google is able to index every page. Include a sitemap. Be sure all your pages are working and that there are no broken links.

Don’t try to fool Google with tricky tactics. The price you will pay is far worse than the effort it takes to do things the right way!
