AMD working on 128-bit CPU or FPU for Windows 8?

Another new feature that might be included in Windows 8 could be support for a 128-bit FPU (List of Windows 8 features).

We all know about x32 and x64 processors. Some people say AMD and Intel are currently working on a new x128 CPU, but would that really make sense?

No, it doesn’t. 128bit CPU’s are neither useful nor is there a market for x128 CPU’s. But it would make sense to create a 128-bit FPU for Windows 8.

A FPU is basically a Floating-point unit that is optimized to work with floating point numbers e.g. 2.55555 or 25555.5.

A 128-bit CPU and OS for the average user is probably not going to be available for the next years, simply because it would be difficult to build a system withou compatibility issues with x32 applications. Although we know that the x64 systems can run most applications as x32 flawlessly, there could be unexpected problems with 128-bit systems and setups.

While Windows 7 is about to be released, Windows Mobile 7 is still in development. It’s Microsoft’s chance to make a really decent mobile Windows. The release date has been pushed back to 2010 (was supposed to be late 2009) by now, the expectations are high.

Windows Mobile 6.5 the predecessor of Windows Mobile 7 has a great interface and works simply great. Of course the expectations are high that Microsoft can make it even better.

Windows 7 Compatibility Test

Windows 7 is about to launch. For new Wndows 7 users it might be interesting to find out if your hardware will be supported by Windows 7. As a rule of thumb, you can say that everything that worked on Vista will also work on Windows 7.

To simply the process of finding incompatible hardware, there’s a official compatibility test site from Microsoft. This site allows you to quickly find out what will run on your system and what not.

Microsoft is still working hard on completing the database, so you won’t be able to access the real database right now, but I expect that the site will be completed soonish.

Whenever you are buying new hardware now, you should check for that little logo above. That is the official “Windows 7 compatible” logo. Thousands of products will be added to the database of Microsoft. Of course it is impossible to add all products and if you find a product without the logo it doesn’t mean it won’t work with Windows 7, but it will be tricky to make it work.
For example, I installed a Linksys Wireless card on Windows 7 x64 that normally wouldn’t work, but with some tricks you can make many things run flawlessly.
