Nokia Sues Apple Over Patent Infringements
Nokia is suing Apple over the alleged infringement of patents held by the Finnish handset maker pertaining to WLAN, GSM and UMTS. Nokia said in a statement:
The ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.
“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,” said Ilkka Rahnasto, Vice President, Legal & Intellectual Property at Nokia. “Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.”
Nokia is holding a conference call about the suit; we’ll be back with more details in a little while.

Windows 7 more popular than Harry Potter in the UK
Managing director of Amazon, Brian McBride said, "The launch of Windows 7 has superseded everyone's expectations, storming ahead of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' as the biggest-grossing pre-order product of all-time at Amazon.co.uk, and demand is still going strong."
McBride added, "Over the past three months, only Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol has sold more copies than Windows 7, which is an incredible achievement for a software product."
Amazon is not the only company to notice such large sales of Windows 7. At the UK launch of Windows 7, PC World claimed to have "sold more pre order copies of Windows 7 than we sold in an entire year for Windows Vista."
Windows 7 already in stores in Israel - still not priced
The versions delivered to stores are Home Premium and Professional, both in Hebrew localization and English (which also sports a Hebrew cover).
Also, to promote Windows 7, Microsoft Israel is holding a decoration contest between different branches of retail stores in Israel, promising the winning branch a meal at a fancy restaurant and a show by any Israeli artist of their choosing.
The advertising theme of the Israeli Windows 7 campaign is "Out with the old - in with the new", featuring several posters with different catchphrase like "Click > Touch" or "Petrol > Solar" (funnier in Hebrew as the words are pronounced the same while written differently)
Microsoft Israel is very market-aware, and always cooperates highly with local retailers to promote Microsoft products.
Apple attempt to gatecrash Win 7 launch with product updates
The biggest change was that the MacBook line has adopted the unibody look that the MacBook Pro uses. The model looks very similar to the Pro line but is in the traditional white color. The laptop can be outfitted with an LED-backlit display, new glass multi-touch track pad, and a built-in battery with 7 hours run time. Only one SKU is available that will have a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM (up to 8GB), an NVIDIA 9400M GPU, 250GB hard drive and the standard SuperDrive.
The Mac Mini also got a couple of updates including a new server option. The base model can be equipped with a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of Ram and a 160GB HDD for $599.99. The second configuration can be outfitted with 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of ram, and a 320 GB HDD all for $799.99. Both units will still ship with the same GeForce 9400M GPU and 8x SuperDrive
Also more interestingly with the Mac Mini is a new server option that ships with two 500 GB HDD's, no optical drive, a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, a GeForce 9400M. The Mini will ship with Snow Leopard server with unlimited clients; retails for $999.99
Apple also updated the iMac line as well; Apple now offers a 21.5 inch model as well as a 27 inch model, both are 16:9 displays and in all aluminum casing. The widescreen panels are LED backlit and have a 178 degree viewing angle. The 21.5-inch iMac has a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, while the 27-incher comes in at 2,560 x 1,440 all on IPS panels. Pricing starts at $1,199 with multiple configuration options which you can find here.
Finally, Apple is introducing a new mouse dubbed "Magic Mouse" that will replace the Mighty Mouse. The Bluetooth device will feature one button and a multi-touch surface that will allow for gestures like the track pads. The device does not have a scroll wheel either but the battery does last four months.
